Feature Match Round 1: Jean-Lou Bernard (Infernity) vs Steven Jacobs (Frog Monarch)

For the first feature match, I’ve invited our current reigning champion, Jean-Lou Bernard to the feature match table. Sitting opposite of him is Steven Jacobs, bringing his Frog Monarchs to the table. While his name may not ring a bell, you’ve probably already heard of him. Will he be able to overcome the man who won it all last year, or will Jean-Lou be taking the first step towards defending his title? We’re about to find out in the opening match of this year’s national championship. It’s time to Duel!

Steven started the game with Swap Frog to put Treeborn Frog in his Graveyard. He bounced it and passed the turn. Jean-Lou thought for a while and opened the game with Armageddon Knight to put another copy in the Graveyard, to revive it with Soul Charge! “Infernity!” Steven noticed. Jean-Lou confirmed this. He put Infernity Archfiend in the Graveyard through the second Armageddon’s effect. He overlaid them for Abyss Dweller! Steven drew, and Jean-Lou used Dweller’s effect. Steven Normal Summoned Swap Frog again and placed Ronintoadin in his Graveyard. Swap Frog returned to his master’s hand. In the End Phase, Steven discarded Raiza the Storm Monarch. Jean-Lou activated Reinforcement of the Army to search out his third Armageddon Knight. He summoned Tinplate Goldfish to bring it out, and dumped Infernity Necromancer to the Graveyard with the Knight’s effect. In the Battle Phase, he attacked with Goldfish and Knight, but when Abyss dweller struck, it got hit by Ghostrick Jackfrost. In Main Phase 2, Jean-Lou overlaid his Monsters to bring out Diamond Dire wolf, who destroyed himself to take down the snowman. Steven drew and brought back Treeborn Frog. He Special Summoned Swap Frog by discarding Mobius the Frost Monarch, and sent another Treeborn Frog to the Graveyard. It got banished to bring out Ronintoadin. Swap Frog returned to the hand, and both monsters were tribute for Light and Darkness Dragon, which took out the set Dweller! Jean-Lou draw for his turn, looks at his Graveyard and scoops! “I drew Archfiend Heiress in my opening hand.” He explains.

Steven wins the first game, and both players dig into their side deck. A few minutes later, we’re ready for game 2. Jean-Lou’s the one to kick this one off, and he did so by setting 1 card and passing. Steven summons Swap Frog and put Treeborn Frog where it belongs. Swap Frog attacked for some damage, and in Main Phase 2 Swap Frog returned to the hand, and Foolish Burial put a second Treeborn Frog in its natural habitat. Jean-Lou Summoned Tinplate Goldfish and special summons Stygian Street Patrol! He Xyz Summons Lavalval Chain, and used his effect to send Archfiend Heiress to the Graveyard, who in her place got Jean-Lou an Infernity Archfiend. He set his entire hand and removed Street Patrol to Special Summon Archfiend, who got Infernity Necromancer into Jean-Lou’s hand. Both Monsters attacked, leaving Steven at 4400 Life Points. Steven used Mystical Space Typhoon to destroy a set Dimensional Prison, and both Treeborn Frogs got banished by 2 copies of Debunk when they tried to activate their effects! Swap Frog put number 3 in the graveyard, and Steven ended his turn. Jean-Lou drew and summoned Stygian Street Patrol, and overlaid it with Infernity archfiend to bring out a second Lavalval Chain, which he used to put another copy of Stygian Street Patrol in the Grave. The other Lavalval Chain puts Archfiend in the grave. Jean-Lou tries to attack, but runs into Battle Fader. Street Patrol Banished itself to summon Necromancer, which used its effect was used to get Archfiend back, who searched Infernity Launcher. Archfiend’s Roar brought back another Archfiend, who searched for another Necromancer. Diamond Dire was summoned and destroyed itself to destroy Battle Fader. Jean-Lou went through tons of cards at lightning speed, managing to end with Infernity Barrier, 2 Set Infernity Breaks and an Abyss Dweller. In Steven’s turn, Dweller’s effect was activated in the Draw Phase. Steven had to think for a while, and ended up scooping.

He started off game 3 with a single set card. Jean-Lou summoned Armageddon Knight which put Infernity Archfiend in the Graveyard. Instant Fusion was used to bring out Kamionwizard, and the 2 monsters were used to Xyz Summon Lavalval Chain, who put  Patrol in the Graveyard. He set 3, and used Patrol to bring ouyt Necromancer, tries to get back  Infernity Archfiend but DD crow. Archfiend hit the field again through Soul Charege, and a large series of plays resulting in another field full of Xyz Monsters hit the field. Steven drew for his turn, revealed his set card to be Mystical Space Typhoon and scooped.

Jean-Lou took a hit in the first game, but managed to unleash a ton of Special Summons in games 2 and 3! “Not a single Maxx “C”!” Steven complains as he starts packing his stuff.
